Text: “When pride cometh, then cometh shame; but
with the lowly is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2
The whole sin of humanity began from the rebellious attitude of
the Devil to exalt his throne above the throne of God. He began to have an over
estimation of his place and worth. What he did not remember was that it was God
who placed him where he was in the first place. He eventually lost his place to
pride.
Pride is an over estimation of who we are, what we have and where
we are. There is nothing we are that someone had not been before. There is
nothing you have that someone has never had before. We are all recipients of
the grace and mercy of God. If not for God’s grace what would have become of
us. Apostle Paul did so much exploits even beyond the Apostles that were before
him but he understood that it was all by the grace of God. He said “But by the
grace of God I am what I am...but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet
not I, but the grace of God which was with me”1 Corinthians 15:10.
Pride has grievous consequences in our lives. God himself resists
a proud man. He makes sure that nothing works right in such a life. Pride is a
way of taking credit for the happenings in our lives and God is angry with such
an attitude.
If a man refuses to humble himself he will end up humiliated.
Daniel 5:20-21 says “But when
his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from
his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: And was driven from the
sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with
the wild asses...”. This continued until Nebuchadnezzar knew that God reigns in
the affairs of men.
The product of pride is principally shame. God withdraws his glory
and the man is left to himself. When we humble ourselves before God he gives us
more grace to do more and to become more.
PRAYER:
In the name of Jesus I overcome every spirit of pride. I humble
myself under the mighty hand of God.
